Greetings to all from rural America!
Very short column today. I have to repair my chainsaw & cut some firewood.
Have you ever had a conversation with someone and suddenly they said something that made you dismiss them as being incapable of being a rational and thinking human being?
Something so shatteringly stupid that you didn’t know whether to burst out laughing, slap them, or just dismiss them as a total waste of your time?
It started out as a reasonable conversation with points and counterpoints made by both of us. This person was still sold on the idea that we stand a chance of turning things around in this country by “fighting from the inside.”
OK. A reasonable enough stance, I thought. So, being interested in how this was supposed to be accomplished, I remarked:
“How can we fight from the inside when the “powers that be” are so corrupt and inflexible that they will not allow any new ideas which may threaten to derail their system?
How can we fight a system of shady back-room deals where we are sold-out from the word say go?”
“How can we fight a massive bureaucracy so controlled by Wall Street and their lobbyists that we don’t stand a chance?”
This person replied “at the ballot box,” and I could tell they were getting increasingly frustrated and angry because I was forcing them to think.
I wasn’t going to convince this person that our only reasonable chance at seeing real change was through taking to the streets and protesting, and they weren’t going to convince me that fighting from the inside would make a bit of difference.
So, to end the conversation, I asked: “Who do you think can help us?”
The reply was: “I’m voting for Obama.”
My reply? “He is just as bought off as the next guy.” (Keep in mind, I vote in every election as my civic duty)
“Oh yeah. Why don’t you just go on home, put on your sheet, and burn a cross.”
A waste of time. When will we unite and realize that Democrat or Republican, they don’t give a damn about you?
