Greetings from Calico Blackie!
The Republican Convention is over and the Democratic Convention is in full swing.
Come November, we will have a choice between Romney and Obama.
We are doomed not by the Republican or Democratic parties but the apathy, gullibility and selfishness of us, the general population.
It seems as if anymore, I just sit back and watch the news with grim fascination and a general sense of resignation that no matter how much graft and corruption in Washington DC is exposed…
No matter how many Wall Street crooks steal our money…
No matter if justice is rapidly becoming a thing of the past in America….
NO MATTER HOW LOUD AND HARD SOME OF US HOWL AND FIGHT FOR REFORM…..
We’ll just continue our zombie-like march towards oblivion.
The riot police outnumber the concerned citizens (protesters) at the Conventions, and most of America is alright with that fact.
They’re ok with free speech being crushed. They’re good with the Constitution being thrown under the bus. They don’t care.
So, here you go….
This is what’s big in the news these days:
Kelly Ripa introduces Michael Strahan as new ‘LIVE!’ co-host
“Kelly Ripa formally introduced on Tuesday retired NFL star Michael Strahan as the new co-host of her syndicated morning show, which has been renamed “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael.”
“Ripa, who has three children with her husband and fellow “All My Children” alum Mark Consuelos beamed and later gave props to the real lady in Strahan’s life – his fiance, Nicole Murphy.”
“Murphy, who is also known as the ex-wife of actor Eddie Murphy, was shown on the side of the stage, smiling.”
“She looks so beautiful,” Ripa said. “I just wanted to show Nicole on TV ’cause she’s so beautiful.”
“Strahan said it’s been hard to keep his new “LIVE!” gig a secret.”
“I’ve not going to say I’ve lied to people,” he said. “I’ve acted very dumb.”
“Tuesday’s episode of “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael” featured celebrity guests Claire Danes from the Showtime series “Homeland,” Aly Raisman and Jordyn Wieber from the U.S. Olympic gold-winning gymnastics team and recent “American Idol” winner Phillip Phillips.”
Calico Blackie says:
While we’re busy watching Kelly and Michael mindlessly bantering away on “LIVE! with Kelly and Michael”, this is also happening in America. Does anybody care?
You will, when and if it ever happens to you, but right now, you’re too busy watching Kelly’s ass wiggle.
Debtors’ Prison Is Back — and Just as Cruel as Ever
By Ross Kenneth Urken
“To most of us, “debtors’ prison” sounds like an archaic institution, something straight out of a Dickens novel. But the idea of jailing people who can’t pay what they owe is alive and well in 21st-century America.”
“According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, debt collectors in Missouri, Illinois, Alabama and other states are using a legal loophole to justify jailing poor citizens who legitimately cannot pay their debts.”
“Here’s how clever payday lenders work the system in Missouri — where, it should be noted, jailing someone for unpaid debts is illegal under the state constitution.”
“First, the creditor gets a judgment in civil court that a debtor hasn’t paid a sum that he owes. Then, the debtor is summoned to court for an “examination”: a review of their financial assets.”
“If the debtor fails to show up for the examination — as often happens in such cases — the creditor can ask for a “body attachment” — essentially, a warrant for the debtor’s arrest. At that point, the police can haul the debtor in and jail them until there’s a court hearing, or until they pay the bond. No coincidence, the bond is usually set at the amount of the original debt.”
“The situation prompted Illinois legislators in July to pass a bill “to protect vulnerable consumers from being hauled to jail over unpaid debts,” in the words of state Attorney General Lisa Madigan. The Debtors’ Rights Act of 2012 requires two “pay or appear” court notices to be sent to debtors before an arrest can be made, and also prevents creditors from calling for multiple examinations unless the debtor’s financial state has significantly changed.”
“It is outrageous to think in this day and age that creditors are manipulating the courts, even threatening jail time, to extract whatever they could from people who could least afford to pay,” Madigan said. “This law corrects that gross oversight and puts a stop to throwing people in jail for being poor while still allowing fair debt collection when people have the means to pay their debts.”
“Illinois notwithstanding, the modern-day debtors’ prison probably isn’t going away anytime soon given the current economic climate: More than a third of US States allow borrowers who can’t or won’t pay their debts to be jailed.”
Calico Blackie says:
So, what were some of the comments after the article? Here’s a sampling…
“I believe the point is you have to face up to your problems and responsibilities. If it gets to the point where you are required to appear in court over the matter, and you fail to meet that legal requirement to appear, then yes you should be arrested and made to face the consequences of your actions or lack there of.”
“If you actually show up in court and defend yourself, the judge will listen. If some debt collector swears under oath that you were served with papers and you weren’t, then he/she can go to jail for contempt, as well as being disbarred.
We live in a land of laws, kids.
If you get served and don’t show, you deserve to go to jail. What is the alternative — Justice by telepathy? The judge should just “know” that you are a hard working, honest person, who just “can’t” pay pack the money you borrowed using your own freewill.”
Calico Blackie says:
Obviously, these people didn’t read the article, or are incapable of reasoning for themselves. Or, they just don’t care as long as it isn’t happening to them.
Finally, there was this comment…..
“The reason these bench warrants are being issued as they are is because the small-time debtors have little ability to defend themselves against the creditor. They are easy pickings for the collecting agencies, who can easily intimidate them.”
Calico Blackie says:
So, while it all goes to hell and while the Democrats are busy holding their grand circle-jerk, we’re watching mindless entertainment on the television. Who knows? Maybe they’ll have television in debtors prison!
Maybe they’ll have television in whatever prison they send us to for being stupid enough to care about our country and our world and for trying to do something about it.
Our last gasp is coming on September 17th when we try to demonstrate against Wall Street greed.
Do you care?
OCCUPY WALL STREET
